A Habitat for Humanity community is slowly being built in Geneva.

The latest members are a family of nine.
Cindy and Jeremy Lapp said they never considered applying for a Habitat for Humanity home until a friend suggested it.

Ontario County Habitat for Humanity looks at three main criteria: the family must be able to repay the mortgage, put a minimum of 400 sweat equity hours into the construction of the home and show a need.

"Just from moving in here from where we were, it’s like a complete Zen experience," Jeremy said. "The kids are not on top of each other so any kind of bickering has gone down to a dramatic minimal… personal space, yard out back."

The Lapp's five bedroom two bathroom home is the largest Ontario County Habitat for Humanity has built. It is also the fourth Habitat home of seven planned for sites off Hawkins Avenue.

Cindy and Jeremy say their mortgage costs them nearly half of what their rent did each month for a four-bedroom apartment.

Habitat for Humanity of Ontario County is seeking committee members for our family selection committee.  The mission of this committee is selecting families for Habitat Housing who are in need, willing to partner and able to pay a no-interest loan to acquire decent, affordable housing.  We are seeking members who have background in teaching, law or finance.  If you are interested you may contact Pam Metting at drpamaud@yahoo.com.
